Update to Yosemite from Snow Leopard

I have a vm with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 installed and am trying to update it to Yosemite 10.10. through the App Store download.
I clicked the GET button on the App Store and it downloaded a Install Mac OS X.app which I installed in the main hard drive (the one created when I first installed Snow Leopard, doing the disk utility thing). When the installation process ends (which, according to several youtube videos should take 25~30 mins, only took like a minute or so), it asks me to re-initiate the machine. I tried both Host+R and Host+Q+starting the machine, but when the machine boots again, it's just the good ol' Snow Leopard again and no HD was apparently taken.

What am I doing wrong or what else should I be doing?
(Sorry for any gramatical and technical errors, english is not my native language and i'm doing all this vm stuff for the first time with no previous knowledge or experience)
