Max OSX 10.6.8 upgrading to Yosemite 10.10.2

Hello,
I'd like to upgrade my MacBook Pro from v.10.6.8 to Yosemite 10.10.2 but I'm concerned about possible conflicts with my Virtual Box drive v.4.3.22.
Is it safe for me to upgrade to Yosemite 10.10.2? I've looked through the postings here but can't get a handle on a yes or no.
Advice is appreciated. Thanks Michael

Which MacBookPro model, memory etc. and what do you mean by your "VirtualBox drive"?

I have a MacBook Pro 7.1 with Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.4GHZ L2 Cache 3mb, Memory 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Hard Drive 250GB.
The Virtual Box (not drive sorry) partition allows me to operate Windows 7 on my Mac. Am I missing anything you need?
Thanks

Sorry, I'm still not sure exactly what you have. Do you have a Bootcamp partition with Windows 7?, are you using VirtualBox to boot the Windows 7 Bootcamp partition?, or did you just create a separate partition to contain VirtualBox guests?

Sorry again, I created a separate partition to contain VirtualBox guests.

Ok, got it. If you upgrade to 10.10 in place and don't format anything you will be fine. One thing I would do is run repaair disk permissions before you upgrade. Nothing on the second partition will be touched. Depending on how you set things up you may have to re-register your guests but that's not hard.

Thank You very much. I'll follow your advice. Can you please tell me the steps to re-register so I have them if needed ?

With VirtualBox open you just choose Machine>Add… menu and navigate to the guest's folder and open the .vbox file.

It would be a good idea to backup your Mac before you do a major update to OS X. While chances are that nothing bad will happen, it's always better to be safe than sorry. I've heard some stories that the update to 10.10 has caused problems for a few people, so a backup would allow you to start over if anything bad happens. If your only backup is a Time Machine backup then don't rely on just it, also make a complete backup using something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. There was a recent thread on MacInTouch about Time Machine backups sometimes not being reliable.

Did you create a .vdi file for this Windows installation or are you using VB to boot a BootCamp partition?

Backups are always a good idea although I've been using Time Machine backups since Time Machine came into being on multiple Macs over the years without any problems.

Anything can fail of course, including the alternate backup solutions.

I realize you already answered the question about using a Bootcamp partition. Sometimes people miss part of a thread. :)

My eyes saw the word "partition" and kind of slid over the rest.

Hello, I followed your advice, did the repair disk permissions and Yosemite works great thanks, except that after I updated to Virtual Box 4.3.24, my apple magic mouse does not work on the VB guest. What are the steps to enable mouse integration please.
Thanks
Michael

There aren't any. This is an intermittent bug in 4.3.24 (if you close and restart the VM, the mouse may or may not work again). Downgrading to 4.3.22 will get rid of that.

How intermittent? I haven't noticed anything.
