My system:
VirtualBox for Mac OS X ver 4.3.2
Mac OS X ver 10.10.2

My dilemma:
I've been successful in installing every version of Windows from Windows NT all the way to the first Windows 10 Tech Preview. But this latest version of Windows 10 will not install regardless of what I do.

I've tried to update it from Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, the previous Windows 10 and I've even tried to do a clean install into a newly created VM. No luck with any of them.

When I try to install booting from the ISO image I get this message:

Recovery
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired.
The operating system couldn't be loaded because the kernel is missing or contains errors.
File: \windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Error code:0xc0000221

You'll need to use recovery tools...

When I boot into the already installed version of Windows (regardless of the version) and run the setup.exe file, the install process seems to go normally until I get a window with this message:

Something happened (title bar)
Windows 10 Technical Preview installation has failed.

Ok...so, now what do I do? Any suggestions?

if you are really running VB 4.3.2 I would uninstall it using the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool and install VB 4.3.22. VB 4.3.2 is almost 2 1/2 years old.

To be absolutely certain just before posting this current message I launched VirtualBox, selected "Check for Updates..." from the VirtualBox menu and received the message:

"You are already running the most recent version of VirtualBox."

I then selected "About VirtualBox" and the resulting window showed that I'm running version 4.3.22 r98236.

I always update to the latest version when prompted to do so but apparently there is another issue lurking in the background that I've not yet discovered. Perhaps if I uninstall and re-install as was suggested that may solve any issues.

I would start from scratch. Create a new Windows 10 VM and make sure to use the correct template, Windows 10 (32bit) or Windows 10 (64bit) depending on which you are installing.

If you'll go back and read my original post you'll see that I've already tried to do a clean install into a newly created VM set up for Windows 10 (both 32 and 64 bit versions...I have both .iso versions) after I was unsuccessful at updating the previous versions (Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1). I've tried all these things with the exception of uninstalling and re-installing the VirtualBox host software. Everything I've tried so far has not been successful.

I'm assuming the only option I have at this point is to do a clean install of VirtualBox first.

If that doesn't work I'm totally stumped.

I've uninstalled and then re-installed the VirtualBox app, I created a new VM configured for Windows 10 64 bit, I booted with the Windows 10 .iso and still got the same blue screen of death:

I'm sorry...I should've mentioned this in the first post.

Mac Mini (Late 2012)
2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM
OS X 10.10.2

Also, I'm trying a new approach at installing Windows 10 as I write this post. I'll report the results later.

A new approach? All I had to do is create a Windows 10 guest, attach the Windows 10 .iso and start the install. I don't know how many other approaches there could be.
If you are using the English .iso the name for the 64bit version should be "Windows10_TechnicalPreview_x64_EN-US_9926.iso".
The size should be 4,214,226,944 bytes (4.21 GB on disk)

If you are using a different language the size should still be approx. 4GB.

I don't have and MD5 value. I confess I don't know how to find that.

I created a new Windows 10 VM and installed the earlier version of Windows 10 that I installed before (Windows Technical Preview Evaluation Copy. Build 9841) and tried to run the latest Windows 10 installer without success. I then updated this version (several update cycles) until I got it up to Build 9879. It would not update any further.

I then attempted to run the Windows 10 update from the latest .iso hoping that it would work. But it didn't. Ended up with the "Windows 10 Technical Preview installation has failed" message...AGAIN!

I really don't know what to do at this point.

hmmm, so you never tried creating a new VM with the 9926 build which is what I suggested?

If you'll re-read my original post you'll see that creating a new VM for a clean install of 9926 was one of the many things that I tried. When I did I got the blue screen of death upon boot up.

In fact, here is the quote from my first post:

So, what did I miss?

Ok, I finally got updated to the latest version of Windows 10...but not by using the .iso I had downloaded.

I booted the VM containing the previous version of Windows 10 and used the Update & Recovery feature under Settings from the Windows (Start) menu. After updating a couple times using this feature I was finally able to get up to Build 9926. I had now idea that capability was there, I just happened to stumble upon it while searching through the menus.

In the future, make sure the check the md5 or sha-1 values match what they are supposed to be. Obviously the W10 9926 .iso was corrupt.

I had heard reports (particularly from Paul Thurrott of thurrott.com) that this latest .iso may be corrupt in some cases.
