What does the Guest Additions icon do?

Guest Additions installs a system tray icon on WinXP. On my system, clicking on it does nothing. The only thing I can get it to do is display the GA version when I mouse over it.

Is that normal? Note that I did not pick the default install location for GA.

Searched here but no answer found; hence, the post.

As far as I know the sole purpose is to tell you what GAs version is installed, which is a common question you might be asked around here. I normally turn update checks, so it's possible that it also does update checks if enabled.
