I posted due to the fact that I might have found a different issue for you. I don't do snapshot ( i believe them evil ) so I can't help you much more than I have. Sorry.
You may want to report this to bugtracker and be very specific in your detailed information you provide them.

Re: Cannot start VM of Windows 7 64bit after creating a snap
I don't know if I can add much to what you've already been told. Like Perry I don't use snapshots because of the obvious danger of data loss (house of cards). I also don't use VHD.ST wrote:Snapshots saves me a lot of time so I hope you guys can help in resolving this.
However, what you seem to be saying is: taking a first snapshot of a VM results in a non-functional VM, if the VM uses a VHD format base disk, and the VHD is not stored in the VM folder. And, this problem seems to have been introduced in 4.3.<what?>. You should raise a BugTracker ticket to report all that.
Since, like the OP, there is nothing of value in your snapshot, then you should be able to recover your VM using the OPs "solution", i.e. create a new VM around the base VHD. I would seriously suggest avoiding VHD and/or snapshots from now on.
