new release vbox on win7 x64

Post by xia »

hi guys
I am interested to try out the new vbox release. I have downloaded it already this is not about were to find a download link.
My question:
1.) do I need to shut off my running VM's while doing the update?
2.) will I need to re-add, re-build my vm's in the new release?

3.)Will it just simply install over the top of my current and just apply the update?
4.)Will it need to remove the earlier edition first & then install the new release?

thanks guys

1. yes
2. no
3. yes
4. no.

you will need to…
1. install the new extension pack
2. update the guest additions for each VM.

Actually, I'd say that correct answers for #3 and #4 rather depend on what version was previously installed. Current guidance is that you don't need to uninstall the previous version for new maintenance releases, but you should do so for major releases (with VBox version numbering, the change from 4.2.x to 4.3.x would count as a major release).

Don, thanks for clarifying. :)

My personal practice is uninstall before every update but I tend to be overly cautious.

And I should have said: current guidance on Windows hosts. I have no idea how well installation on others hosts works.

Come to think of it, what is this topic doing in "Windows Guests"? The guest OS choice is irrelevant to these questions. I'll move it to "Windows Hosts".
