This is probably a side effect of a fix to volume handling in the HDA device emulation. It looks like for existing VMs, the volume setting is interpreted differently and the audio output is inaudible. All I needed to do to fix it in a Windows 7 VM was to click on the voulume control slider in the taskbar (didn't even need to change the volume).
As others observed, this has nothing to do with muting. The output is just too quiet. The behavior may depend on what the volume level was set to before the upgrade.

Same issue in new version 4.3.22 - this is what I tried to fix - still no sound. I tried reinstalling drivers, installing downloaded driver, reinstalling guest additions, installing K-lite codec pack, checking all volume controls, sliders etc and not muted. Also uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled host sound drivers. In meantime will be downgrading to older 4.3.20 where was working sound. Host sound works well through speakers.
Have also submitted to bugtracker at
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13862

Astrogirl, did you read what the fix was before you started installing and uninstalling things?
As far as your ticket, you didn't add a vbox.log or any other pertinent info so there isn't much of a chance anyone will look at it.
and stating… "many others also reported on forum that sound that was working has stopped in newer version." when there are only two reports beside yours seems overstated.

OK yes I should add a log before I uninstall -reinstall old ver -will do thanks - also at bugtracker -here it is
I am on Windows- XP guest on 8.1 host, I did read other posts - sorry at least 2 others have reported you are correct - I just saw whole thing - a lot of replies -yes overstated

I did try other things in replies to fix too before uninstalled, still no sound.
Seeing this in settings file/log
00:00:16.527425 Audio: Trying driver 'dsound'.
00:00:16.757013 Audio: set_record_source ars=0 als=0 (not implemented)
00:00:31.166535 DSound: create capture buffer E_FAIL
not sure what means though.

Do you have ICH AC97 set as the sound card for the guest?

yes sorry was going to add I am using ICH AC97 in settings with Windows Direct Sound- tried sound blaster too but no audio controller and therefore no driver gets detected in device manager.
The ICH AC97 default one is what had in 4.3.20 version and before.
If I change to Intel HD Audio setting I get yellow check mark with Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus in device manager and and am trying to locate a driver on internet for this to see if works -any suggestions?
Also which of these audio devices do you think is best, some of my xp software uses hardware acceleration and 3D graphics, and why?
Please reply soon as I have not uninstalled this ver 4.3.22 yet but will need to soon to get audio otherwise. My kids need educational software on this that uses audio.

I see you got a response on the ticket, so let's just stick to that.
Although your problem matches the topic of thread, it's actually quite different. It's specific to Windows hosts, and based on the symptoms I'm quite certain that changing the emulated device in the VM is not going to make any difference, even if you could find working drivers. AC'97 is the right choice for XP guests.
What's worse is that it seems to be specific to your particular system, so we'll need the log files you were asked for in the ticket in order to resolve it.

Please! The Guest Additions have
nothing to do with audio in the guest. Where do these wacky ideas keep coming from? Is it something in the VirtualBox documentation?

Certainly. See
https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/13862 The short story is that for some reason the slightly changed DirectSound backend doesn't work on this particular user's system anymore, but we don't know why and we don't see the problem ourselves.

I saw the ticket. I suggested the user add the logs.
Perhaps a rollback to VB 4.3.20 will suffice. Or is that too "Wacky"?

It will solve the immediate problem for the user, but it won't get it fixed in VirtualBox. I guess whether that will suffice is in the eye of the beholder

michaln,
It comes from a user that is trying to help another user and does not have the in-depth knowledge that the developers do about the workings of the code. They try to help and suggest things that may help, usually out of desperation. They do this for free and because they truly want to help.
Your constant degradation of these helpers is going to run them off and then where will the end users be, or do you even care? I'm sure you have noticed my slowdown because of constantly been told that I was stupid when I made a mistake and even when I don't. I'm human and do make mistakes, but don't like to be ridiculed for them.

Thank You Perry, he did tick me off to no end. I've noticed his comments to others as well.
At any rate, one reason I suggested the 4.3.23 GAs was because the 4.3.22 GAs were broken for WIndows so I thought it couldn't hurt to have working GAs. Not to mention at times things that shouldn't have any effect sometimes do.
Thanks Again.
