Kali fresh install, fails to boot at first bootup

Latest version of Kali and VirtualBox, fails to boot/display properly at first bootup. Black screen with cursor at top left.
Host: Macmini running 10.6.8 with 1.83GHz intel core duo, 2GB RAM, 64GB Kingston SSD
Guest: Kali 32bit, 1CPU, 512MB RAM, 20GB HD
Probably an easy fix, as I"m new to virtualbox.

I'm not sure if this is the problem but the VRAM for your kali guest is set to only 12MB. I would set it to at least 24MB if not more. Kali uses Gnome 3 which takes a bit of VRAM to run. You should also change the operating system template to Debian (32bit). Also not sure why you opted for vmdk for the virtual drive. You don't have the extension pack installed in VirtualBox and no guest additions installed in Kali.

One thing I don 't know. Your Mac is over 7 years old and I'm not sure about your graphics card. Have you run other guests?

I've tried your first 2 suggestions and even started from scratch, using vdi as the disk. I also installed the extension pack, but not sure how to add guest additions to Kali. I'm getting the exact same result.
