Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
I have Windows2012 R2 VHD trial installed under VBox 4.3.20 and it was working fine UNTIL I created a snapshot while the 2012 system was powered down. Now when I attempt to start it up I get the following error:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Win2012R2 via VHD.
No error info.
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: ProgressProxy
Interface: IProgress {c20238e4-3221-4d3f-8891-81ce92d9f913}
The hard drive in settings refers to UUID not matching to the differential disk created for the snapshot. There is no way that I can see to actually copy this information into the windows clipboard.
I tried deleting the snapshot but was unable to however that process allowed me to copy the following error information:
Failed to delete the snapshot Before Windows Updates of the virtual machine Win2012R2 via VHD.
Parent UUID {00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000} of the medium 'F:\.VirtualBox\Machines\Win2012R2 via VHD\Snapshots\{8d80a186-eda3-460a-90a6-1f056b60095f}.vhd' does not match UUID {883c6053-e08b-49f4-be8c-44358ca90ef9} of its parent medium stored in the media registry ('C:\Users\gregg/.VirtualBox\VirtualBox.xml').
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Medium
Interface: IMedium {05f2bbb6-a3a6-4fb9-9b49-6d0dda7142ac
There is a VirtualBox.xml and a VirtualBox.xml-prev file in the users .virtualbox directory
Is this error caused because I foolishly created a snapshot of what was a VHD file?

Depends. How did you shut down?
Re: Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
I used the Windows2012 R2 normal shutdown command and only created the snapshot AFTER the Virtual machine window had closed down.Perryg wrote:Depends. How did you shut down?

Re: Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
What happens if you select to create the snapshot while the machine is running? I don't really do a lot with snapshots and if shutting it down first causes issues you should report it to bugtracker Being careful to explain very clearly.

The Windows2012 R2 virtual machine is dead. It will not start up period!

In the main manager, does it show the snapshot and the original? Can you post a screen shot of the section?

Hopefully this is what you meant.

Re: Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
All double clicking on the snapshot does is allows you to rename the snapshotPerryg wrote:So if you dbl click on the Before Windows Update will it start?
Re: Windows2012R2 VHD fails to start after Snapshot taken
I have decided to cut my losses and to wipe the virtualbox out and start all over again from scratch.

Hi there, is there any solution for this issue? I have exactly the same problem. This issue is also described here

and here

However, the SetVHDParentUUID tool did not work for me.

I will not go offsite to read about your or others problems, and I don't much trust a self assessment of "same problem" either. Please create a new topic and describe your own symptoms fully.
