Guest Additions version conflict
Guest Additions version conflict
I am running VirtualBox version 4.3.20_r96997. The Guest Additions .iso that came with this is Version 4.3.20_r96996.
Is the Guest Additions Version 4.3.20_r96997 .iso available separately or do I need to reinstall VB?

The versions are correct.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
Then perhaps my issue is a different one. In a Mint guest I get an alert: 'Running in software rendering mode. ...running without video hardware acceleration.' A forum search turned up several responses that suggested that this was due to a GA version conflict.
If i don't find a solution, I will start a new thread on that subject.
Thanks for your reply.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
When you installed the guest additions did you remove the ones that come with Mint first or just install 4.3.20 on top of what was installed?

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
I used the "Insert Guest Additions" from the "Devices" button. The Terminal window showed a warning that the GA Version did not match the VB version. I proceeded anyway and the terminal showed it to be uninstalling the existing GA and inserting the new one.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
Well that's a problem. You need to open Synaptic, do a search for virtualbox and remove the three files you should see, virtualbox-guest-dkms, virtualbox-guest-utils and virtualbox-guest-x11 then reboot the guest.
next run…
in the terminal. dkms should be installed already but just in case.
Then re-install the guest additions from the menu as before and reboot Mint once more.
next run…
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install dkms build-essentialThen re-install the guest additions from the menu as before and reboot Mint once more.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
Thanks for the advice but I did as you suggested with no change. I checked Synaptic and no Virtualbox software is running. I tried rebooting and reinserting the GA with no change.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
You have to have 3D acceleration enabled in the settings for the guest.Craig5 wrote:Thanks for the advice but I did as you suggested with no change. I checked Synaptic and no Virtualbox software is running. I tried rebooting and reinserting the GA with no change.
attach the vbox.log (compressed).

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
I actually have the 64bit version of LM 17.1 Cinnamon installed as a guest. It came with their version of 4.3.18 guest additions pre-installed and they worked fine so I never bothered to upgrade them. I just installed the 4.3.20 GAs as I instructed and they are working as well.
Here's the link to the 4.3.20 GAs. http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... 4.3.20.iso
you could try using these but they should be the same. just attach them to your LM guest as you would an install .iso and run them.
Edit: I downloaded the 32bit version just to see if it was any different but 3D worked "out of the box" from the LiveCD. No software rendering.

Re: Guest Additions version conflict
SOLVED
It didn't occur to me that I needed to go back and reset the 3d acceleration.
SFSG
Thanks!
