Virtual machine running but the screen is black

HI all,
I have a windows 7 Professional SP1 host and created a virtual machine of the same system.
I am using VBOX release 4.3.20.

Problem: when I launch the virtual machine I can see the video for a few seconds (typical windows loading bar), then suddendly the screen becomes black.

Interesting enough, the virtual machine is there and working (I can "hear it" from the startup and login sounds); also, I am able to play songs "blindly" (i.e. by using the keyboard by memory).

I tried to change all the config parameters, but no changes.

Any help with this issue would be highly appreciated.
