Ping guest vm with domain name?

Post by eflynn »

Hi, how, if possible, do I ping guest vm from host with its domain name? It says name not found. I've added the name to host's etc/host file.

I can ping guest from host with IP address and I can ping host from the guest. Also, I can ping a site like Google from within guest vm.

Host = windows 7
Guest = centos 6.5

Guest network is host only.

How much do you know about networks? Aren't both guest and host in the same domain?

Anyway, the obvious answer is that you use a DNS service to look up the IP address. If this fails then the domain isn't listed or isn't unique.

Are you confusing the domain name with the friendly name of the guest?

Anyway the /etc/hosts name will not do what you want since I assume you want to reach the guest from the host. You need to add the friendly name to the the hosts hosts file.
You can however use the /etc/hosts if you intention is to reach the host from the guest, and if that is not working you must have not entered the proper information.

Also be aware that ping is disabled by default in newer Windows and you would need to enable icmp in the firewall to turn it on.
