I'm with Perryg on this one : if you are "the IT people", then my logical next step is to sniff traffic using tcpdump on the guest and wireshark on the host, and see if packets are at least going out.
Then I would sniff on the destination, and see if the packets arrive...

I second on this one.
This is exactly how I've managed to get my headless VM going when it refused to pick up the network.
Just put "tcpdump -i br0 icmp " on external if and digged through every step to get ping to at least show up.
Turned out, there was more than one issue, but I have internet in the end.
