Can't start Ubuntu VM in headless mode

Somehow I got my system in a state where I can only start my VM headless with the VBOXheadless syntax.
--> VBOXheadless --startvm VMname
Using the VBOXmanage startvm "VMNAME" --type==vrdp syntax as well as holding shift key while starting from GUI both result in errors
The problem impacts all of my VMs including ones newly created. Problem is persistent across a complete uninstall and reinstall of VBOX and the extensions and creation of new VM.:
