VM aborts when started headless [RESOLVED]

Post by ECH »

Hello,

I didn't used Virtualbox for a week or two,

Today, I Tried to run one of my machine and it aborted.

I Created a Brand new vm ( using ubuntu 14.04 ISO, and a NAT interface)
the closest to de default settings as possible

The I used the following commands:
lt-ec:~ ec$ VBoxManage list vms
...
"test" {1eac68c8-05db-468d-817f-77f0f54ae8f9}
lt-ec:~ ec$ VBoxManage startvm test
Waiting for VM "test" to power on...
VM "test" has been successfully started.
lt-ec:~ ec$ VBoxManage startvm test --type=headless
Waiting for VM "test" to power on...
VM "test" has been successfully started.
lt-ec:~ ec$
I attached the log files for the respective runs...

Mys System

MacbookPro retina 15 " end 2014 16GB RAM Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4870HQ CPU @ 2.50GHz
OSX Yosemite 10.10.2
Virtual box 4.3.20
Virtualbox extension pack 4.3.20r96996

Any ideas for helping me diagnosing this issue ?
Thanks in advance,
Etienne

Re: VM aborts when started with VBoxManage --type headless

I tried to diagnose and found this:

I opened the "Console" Application and looked at the System.log file

Just before aborting the vm, such a line was output in the system.log:
Feb 5 19:36:31 lt-ec.private.network VBoxHeadless[1251]: The application with bundle ID org.virtualbox.app.VirtualBox is running setugid(),
which is not allowed.
Does it ring bells in heads ?
Thanks for your support

Try to run without arguments:
VBoxManage
This will give you a list of options. The -s starts your VM. I didn't see one option for stopping the VM. Funny. I guess you'll have to stop it with VBoxManage. So try (with a VM that you're willing to abort) to run:
VBoxManage -s <YourVM>
I got a question about allowing it through the firewall ( on 10.6.8 ), which may trigger something in the allowed applications list. I had run headless VMs before mind you, just not with VBoxHeadless...
Do NOT send me Personal Messages (PMs) for troubleshooting, they are simply deleted.
Do NOT reply with the "QUOTE" button, please use the "POST REPLY", at the bottom of the form.
If you obfuscate any information requested, I will obfuscate my response. These are virtual UUIDs, not real ones.

Hello,

I think I found the culprit !

As soon as I uninstalled ncryptedcloud , I was able to start virtual machines in headless mode.

Just to be sure, I reinstalled ncryptedcloud and ... bardaf.... headless vm aborted while booting.

For now, I'm just removing ncryptedcloud and post a feedback on their site !

Thanks for the help ans sorry for the noise !
Etienne

PS: cannot post the but the web site is encryptedcloud dot com
