Hey Guys,

I have reformatted an old machine to mess around with some VM's. I planned to install W7 as the main OS on the machine and it kept giving me that common error which states a new partition cannot be setup. So to avoid frustration I just installed 8.1 as I sort of wanted to give it a chance anyways (Im a mac user mostly.

The machine is a quad core 2.6ghz IIRC, with 4gb ram. The computer itself is running fine. And Kali linux is running fine in VB but 7 is giving is basically unusable. Win 7 run great on VB on my Mac. I cloned both the Win 7 and Kali Linux from the mac VB to the Win 7.

I don't believe that's the issue though as ive seen win 7 is giving quite a few VB users some issues. My old pc specs should be good enough to run it right? Has anyone got ideas.. I was trying to use this for the main VM for testing some programs .. Thx.

What are the specs of your Mac? Of your old machine? Of your Win7? Because with the information that you have provided us, the only thing I can say is, no, I do not see your problem.

The mac has a little more horsepower than the old pc. Mac is 2.3 Intel Core i7. 8GB ram. Running 10.9.4.

I provided specs for PC what else do you need to know? The win 7 is 64bit ultimate.

thx

I should have included it from the beginning: Minimum information needed for assistance. The most important is the zipped VBox.log of the guest after you shut it down.

Got it. I am currently out of town. When I get back to that machine I will report back to this thread with all the info.

Thank you!

With 4GB of RAM and what I guess is a 32 bit host OS you performance is going to be mediocre if you want to do anything productive with the guest OS. At most your guests should have 1GB of RAM with the host only having 4GB. Anything more starves the host and starts Windows caching to disk.

I just recently updated my laptop from 4 to 8 GB and put Win 7 64 bit on it. It makes the difference between night and day. Performance is about 4 times better and I give each guest 3GB (I run one at a time).

I am thinking of upgrading it to 8gb. Should be cheap enough to add 4 more gb. But seen as the ram and everything old probably cant get same type, does that matter?

Thanks

Of course it matters, it simply won't work. You cannot put DD3 RAM in DDR2 slots (they do not fit), and even then the timing has to match. I would head to a computer repair shop. Other than that, it's a great idea, the more RAM the better.
