I have a free partition on my HDD.
Should I install the Vbox on the root partition or can I install it on the free partition?

"install the vbox"? That's slightly ambiguous - do you mean the software or the data (VMs)?
You can install the software normally, it takes up very little space.
On the other hand, your VMs will generally take up a LOT of space, and for that reason users often locate the VMs on a second drive, especially if the first drive is an SSD. To do that you run the VirtualBox program, select File|Preferences|General, and set the value of the Default Machine Folder field to point to your preferred container folder. All VM folders will in future be created as subfolders in that container folder. I do this myself, using a container folder called "D:\VirtualBoxVMs".
