Question about raw disk access.

Yesterday I semi-successfully added a physical disk to my host to clone one of my VMs to. I started by creating the .vmdk pointer exactly as outlined in the manual. When I tried to attach the .vmdk to the VM it threw an access denied error. After searching the forums, I found a couple of solutions that got me up and running to a degree. The first was to take the disk offline in the host and the second was to set it to read-only. Now I am able to start and run the VM, but only when VirtualBox is launched using "run as administrator". If I launch it normally it complains that a disk is inaccessible, and the newly created .vmdk has an exclamation mark next to it in Media Manager. I will gladly post logs if necessary, but I first wanted to toss this question out there in case I'm overlooking something glaringly obvious. My host is Windows 8.1 (8 cores, 16gb), and the guest is Windows 10 (2 cores, 4GB).

Moved to "Windows Hosts".
