virtual machine only updates window when paused

Hi,
I'm using Ubuntu 7.10 (gutsy gibbon) and I've recently installed Virtualbox (and all the associated packages) via the synaptic package manager in order to use a Windows XP virtual machine.
Virtualbox itself works fine, but the XP machine i've created with it behaves extremely oddly. Initially I thought it simply wasn't booting at all, as the window remained black, but I noticed the hard drive & cd activity indicators flashing. Upon pausing the machine, the window displayed the XP setup screen (albeit in black & white, with very visible horizontal lines). What I've found is the window only updates when I pause the machine. I've actually managed to get all the way through XP's setup pausing & unpausing it, so the virtual machine itself appears to be working fine other than this strange display problem.
Does anyone have any ideas about this issue? I'm on a Dell Vostro 1000 with an integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 1150. No amount of changing video memory/ram settings in Virtualbox resolves this issue, and I've tried creating several different virtual machines all of which perform the same way.
Many thanks in advance.
