Shared folder, network share, and a VPN

I have Snow Leopard installed on virtual box on my iMac. I cannot get a shared folder to mount. From what I am reading here that is part of guest services which does not exist for OSX. So I mounted the folder via a network share. Then I turned on my VPN software from within virtual osx and the folder became unresponsive. So my question is how can I run a VPN and still access a folder on my iMac?
