Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
Hi, I'm using Virtual Box to run Windows XP on Windows 7. However, when I booted the ISO, if left me with a console thats seems to be DOS or some similar language (It's command prefix is 2.0 Shell>). What do I do to run the Windows XP desktop? Please reply ASAP!
Will I have to do this everytime I boot, because my company isn't the most "Technologically Aware" group...
Thanks In Advance,
LaffyFX

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
That clearly isn't an XP setup CD (ISO). Sounds more like WinPE. You'll need a proper legal XP setup CD (or ISO of same) in order to install XP from scratch.
Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
I downloaded it from Microsoft (First link that comes up if you Google "Windows XP ISO"). I thought it would work because it was from Microsoft. Am I wrong, is there anywhere I can download the correct ISO? (Even for money)?
Thanks,
LaffyFX

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
Microsoft isn't known for giving operating systems away for free, especially ones they no longer wish to promote. At best what you have is a time limited demo, but not of XP. What is the download link?

It's the service pack 3 .iso.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
you can still get a 30day trial of XP from https://www.modern.ie/en-us/virtualization-tools. I'm not sure if Microsoft will still activate it however.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
The SP3 ISO isn't bootable, AFAIK. It wouldn't get the reported symptoms.

well that's the first link that is listed doing a Google search as the OP mentioned and it is from Microsoft's site.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
The OP may mean this screen which you get if you enable EFI. Otherwise it gives the "no bootable media..." error as one would expect.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
Yep, the same thought occurred to me when I saw mention of the EFI shell in another thread. Which would mean that the OP enabled the EFI boot mode for an XP guest - not recommended.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
I'm starting to think users just enable and disable features at random.

Re: Windows XP on Windows 7 Problems
Hi, thanks for your replies! It was the EFI shell image as was displayed above, however, I have gotten it working! I had initially enabled EFI Mode for this operating system solely because it was the recommended solution on another site, and at the time if it wasn't in that mode, I got absolutely nothing, even if I let it load for hours. Thanks again for your help, and I also found away to enable XP through the Registry Editor.
Thanks Again,
LaffyFX
