Problems installing VirtualBox

Post by Robot »

I have been trying to get a virtual machine going with a windows 8.1 host and an windows XP guest firstly I tried Hyper-v which worked but could not access host's USB ports, then I heard about Virtualbox with its extender pack which would solve all my problems.
So I deleted all of the hyper-v programs and installed Virtualbox which installed ok with the guest additions etc but I was having problems transferring files, folders etc from the host to VB.
I had nearly succeeded when I developed a problem trying to access VB again I kept getting a error message which read failed to load unit 'HGCM'.
Also when I tried to load software into the VB it would not allow me to but some like Mozilla firefox would be ok.
So after sometime trying to resolve this issue I decided to delete all and start again.
I deleted the 4.2 program ok but the rest stayed in the system somewhere so I deleted all Oracle programs that I could find but that was unsuccessful.
I went thru the websites to try and resolve this issue but that was also was unsuccessful so now here I am with a system that does not work.
Hope you can resolve this for me thank you looking forward to hearing from you.
Also when it is going I can download software but it won't run 2 examples Winzip, Canoscan driver for Canon Scanner.
That is just 2 but there are many more also to do anything it is very slow in VB.

It would help you a lot if you stopped thrashing when you hit a problem, as that just sinks you deeper into the mire. For example, reinstalling the software is only useful if you have a reason to believe that will fix your problem. In which case it helps to understand what your problem actually is first.

Step 1. Uninstall VirtualBox as much as your Windows host will let you.
Step 2. Look for the folders "<userdoc>\.VirtualBox" and "<userdoc>\VirtualBox VMs". Delete them entirely. Only do this step if you don't care about existing VMs.
Step 3: Look for the "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox" folder. Delete it entirely, with contents if any.
Step 4: Search the registry for any keys which mention VirtualBox or VBox. Delete them.
Step 5: Install VirtualBox v4.3.12. Do not install any later version.

Report any errors seen precisely, do not take any other action.

Firstly Thanks for replying.
I tried all that you suggested and deleted some files that I had missed and loaded VB up again but to no avail then for no reason I noticed in VB manager that an icon called discard was which had not been on or maybe I had not noticed and I clicked on this which changed the state of the VM which at this stage had been in the saved condition and that removed the error message so I continued with the rest of the setup .
I programmed a virtual share folder in the host and copied all the files, folders into the Virtual share folder and completed the share program in VB which seemed to work but I have the problem that some folders won't work so I downed the drivers etc from a website which loaded or seem to load but when I tried they would not run or load into the VB.
EG: canoscan, winzip are just 2 but programs like mozilla firefox, Avast were ok and also working within VB on some programs are very slow mainly the files, folder that I transfered from the host.
Hope you can help me in this area.
I have since found that only part of the software that is downloaded from the website is getting through therefore not able to run.
Can anyone tell me if I am in the right place as I have not heard from anyone.

I have downloaded VB and the associated software and all downloaded ok and I have a full screen etc.
I have created a virtual share folder in the host windows 8.1 and downloaded files into it for down load to VB windows XP.
I have also programed VB to accept these files which works ok but the files won't run in vb and are very slow to respond so I downloaded files from the website which also won't run but I noticed that the downloaded file is always a part file is there something that I have to I have to add or alter for VB to accept these files maybe firewall or browser.
EG: Files like canoscan and winzip are just 2 that won't work.
Can someone assist me in this area please.

If you have programs you want to run in the guest, you should install them in the guest. Either download them directly into the guest or copy them to the guest from the shared folder and then install them.

Please post a VM log file. Right click VM in GUI, select "Show Log", save "VBox.log" (only) to a file, zip file and attach here. Make sure the VM is shut down before you collect the log of the session.

when you create a new message, underneath the message area is the upload attachment tab. browse for the file and add it.

btw? can't you create .zip files? not everyone can unrar files.

192MB is a strange size to pick for VM RAM. For an XP VM I would put 512MB in that field. Also 16MB is not enough display RAM - I'd go with 48MB there.

Also, discard the saved state and don't use saved state again until you have settled on a final VM recipe. A VM that is booted from scratch is always more likely to be stable than one that assumes that a past environment is still valid.

You are right with the advice but I can't adjust these settings when I access these areas I don,t have any control I click on system or display that displays that area but the display is like a light grey and not adjustable or is there another way of accessing this area to adjust the settings.
I have also tried through the setting icon and I get the same result.
I have worked it out the VB was running and should have been off.
I have adjusted the settings but the files I download still have problems they are corrupt and won't run in vb.

Could the host browser affect the download of drivers how close is the VB to the host.

No, the host browser is not relevant to the guest.
