Can't boot with USB 2.0 enabled

Post by seam0nster »

I need to use USB 2.0 for Windows 8.0, my host is Windows 7.
I Installed extension pack, Enabled USB 2.0, however I cannot start the Win8 VM while USB 2.0 is enabled (works fine if I disable it.)

Error:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Windows 8.
VD: error VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED opening image file 'C:\Users\xxxx-01\Documents\Windows 8\Windows 8.vmdk' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005)
Component: Console
Interface: IConsole {db7ab4ca-2a3f-4183-9243-c1208da92392}
Any suggestions how to fix this anyone? I've exhausted myself searching for a solution to this specific problem.

Sorry about the late reply, see attachment for what you requested.

Additionally, in another thread someone suggested that the problem was that the VM was originally created in VMware, Which is the case. They suggested I remove VMware tools, which I did through the windows uninstall programs feature, as well as sweeping through the registry to remove any remains and deleting services through cmd.

I suppose getting a fresh start on Virtual box would be the answer here but would really rather not have to go through the effort of setting up a new VM and reinstalling all required programs if there's a faster solution.

All help and advice is greatly appreciated.

Update:
This thread is no longer relevant for myself, trouble shooting from the attached logs won't help me anymore. I decided to try updating Virtual box after skimming the logs myself and seeing a version conflict between the extensions and my version. Anyhow, I updated Virtual box and now I can't open any of my Virtual Machines at all, which is a huge problem. I will leave the thread for the possibility of anyone having the same problem, while I attempt to recover my VMs.

After all that, I figured out the problem was just my stupidity, It was simply a mismatched extension addition to the version I was using previously.

I also learned that version 4.3.12 of Virtual box is probably the way to go if you want to update and not have to trouble shoot a bunch of errors to run your old VMs.

Anyway it's all good now, sorry for the waste of a thread. Some things to try for people that can't boot with USB 2.0 enabled:
  • Check your extension version is compatible with the version of your Virtual box, it won't necessarily tell you that's the case if you install the wrong version.
The logs aren't exactly cryptic, If I read my own to begin with I never would of had to make this thread.
version 4.3.12 of Virtual box is a pretty cool guy
Live and learn, Thanks all.
