Windows 10 Custome Resolution

Post by ayoksh »

I got guest additions installed and everything seems to be working great. But i can select the screen resolution of 1920x1080. I have a amd 64bit processor and 64 bit version of Virtual box. Can someone help me fix this.

-Right-Click on your VM and click "Show in Explorer".
-Now close VirtualBox.
-In the Explorer window find the ".vbox" file and make a backup just in case you mess up
-Open the file in a text editor(I recommend Notepad++, normal Notepad won't display it correctly)
-You'll see an XML file. Find the "<ExtraData>" tag and make a new line after it and paste the following:

Code: Select all

<ExtraDataItem name="CustomVideoMode1" value="1920x1080x32"/>
-You can add spaces in front of it so it lines up with the other items if you want.
-Save the changes
-Now open VirtualBox and load your VM
-Once you've logged into Windows try changing the resolution again, there should now be a '1920x1080' option.

In VirtualBox, right-click the VM you want to fix and choose "Show in Explorer". It'll open the folder where your VM's files are stored. ".vbox" is the file type. So it'd be something like "Windows 10 TP.vbox" or whatever you named your VM.

The correct method is with the guest shutdown, open the host terminal and run…

Code: Select all

VBoxManage setextradata "vm name" "CustomVideoMode1" "1920x1080x32"
replace "vm name" with "Windows 10" in this case.

*use the full path for vm name for Windows hosts.

Thanks for suggestion to use VBoxManage. I used this to get 1920 x 1200 resolution in Build 9926 and it worked fine (once I had opened the command-prompt (I use a Windows 8.1 host) in the C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox folder, since VBoxManage was not found, otherwise).
Puzzlingly, I did not need to do this with the previous build of Windows 10, Build 9879, which already included higher resolutions in the options for screen resolution.

Sorry about that. I should have explained you need the full path on Windows hosts. The GA's seem to be broken with Windows 10 (9926)

Any other suggestions on getting Windows 10 TP running in wide screen mode? My host is Mac OS X Yosemite. I am running Windows 10 TP Build 9926. I would like to get a 1600x900 display. I've installed GA's with no problems. I've tried all of the above tips and all I still get is the stock Windows resolutions. I've tried both editing the XML file directly and going the VBoxManage route. I sure wish I could get this to work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

A followup to my question above. I've looked at the .vbox file and the changes to ExtraData are gone. Is there something that could be overriding the changes?

One final post. I've got it to work. Evidently when I was running VBoxManage, I still have Virtualbox running. Very happy now. I have wide screen plus sound is working.
