I don't know if this information is important, but I have a iMac mid 2011 with i5 3.1 GHz and 20 GB of RAM. Yosemite is fresh installed, and the computer runs latest updates.
The iso I am trying to install is just downloaded off Microsoft's server. The Win-flag shows for some seconds before the installation fails. I never see the Win 8 "installation screen" where I could choose language etc.
From Perry's post it looks like you have an external superdrive and you or someone created a DVD with a Windows.iso on it? Assuming the .iso is valid you would be better off copying the .iso to your hard drive and attaching the .iso directly. It would be faster to install. If you want to still try installing it from the DVD make sure passthrough is enabled. That's not the normal file name for an .iso from Microsoft's site.
OSX, Linux and Windows Hosts & Guests
There are three groups of people. Those that can count and those that can't.
I was only trying to be specific about putting it on my Mac's HDD and not in the virtual HDD for the Win8, and I see that I was not specific enough in my question
I am copying the iso now, so will try soon installing Win 8 again.
I am not very familiar with Windows any longer. Haven't used it really since 2009, and then I used Win XP. I tried again the installer, but this time I saw that there is a different choice than Virtualbox did itself.
Virtualbox chose "Windows 8" as installation "preset", but I saw now there is another choice called "Windows 8.1". I have never understood that Win 8.1 is different compared to Win 8. I have just looked upon the .1 as the old SP1 & SP2 for Win XP.
So correcting the choice from "default choice" "Windows 8" to "Windows 8.1" corrected the matter.
