Ubuntu guest sometimes hangs

Post by Daniel__ »

Code: Select all

VirtualBox 4.3.20 downloaded from web site
Host: iMac (27-inch, Late 2013), Yosemite 10.10.1
Guest: Ubuntu 14.04 (desktop) + guest additions
CPU: 2 cores for host, 2 cores for guest
RAM: 4GB for host, 4 GB for guest
I have been using this setup for awhile without issues. Yesterday the VM froze causing me to lose some data. I had to forcefully shut it down. I was running the previous version of VB (4.3.14 if not mistaken). So I took that chance to do an update to VB 4.3.20. I've also done a few reboots to make sure all was well.

Today after some hours the VM froze again in a similar situation like yesterday. I can see the screen but the mouse/keyboard won't move in the guest. If it helps, I opened the the Activity Monitor of OSX and the process was showing (when I looked) just over 20 recent hangs and rising; it stopped at 208 hangs. CPU at around 100%, sometimes over, sometimes below. Real and private memory at 4 GB and virtual memory at 7,5 GB.

Inside the VM I had nautilus (multiple), terminal and Android Studio opened. I'm doing USB development for an Android device, which is connected to the VM; I often have to connect and disconnect the device from the VM.

I'd appreciate any insights on what could be causing this. The VM is still running (hanged) so if someone knows magic VB commands to throw at it that might unfreeze the beast those would be welcome.

You are borderline overcommiting memory.
00:00:02.979876 Host RAM: 8192MB total, 5126MB available
00:00:04.310270 RamSize <integer> = 0x0000000100000000 (4 294 967 296, 4 GB)
Normally it's recommended to use approx 50% of the host's available memory not the total memory. Try reducing the guest RAM to 2GB.
