Trouble Storing Ubuntu in Virtual Box (Windows)

Post by kennyrkenny »

'm following a really help full guide to set up a VM on my Windows 7 laptop. I'm wanting to put Ubuntu on my computer through Virtual Box. I'm following these steps from instructables:

1) Download the latest version of Ubuntu from xx. It is optional to donate to the cause. I wholeheartedly recommend it.
2) Open VirtualBox if you haven't already.
3) Click on your newly created VM and go to "settings"
4) From here click the "storage" subcategory.
5) In the storage tree, click on the disk icon that should say "empty." If it doesn't then click on it anyway.
6) Click on the small disk with the down arrow to the right of the field under "attributes" on the right side of the storage window.
7) Locate the .iso you just downloaded from the Ubuntu website.
8) "Ok" the settings window to return to the main window of VirtualBox.
9) Click "Start"

After step 7, I am given an error:
"Failed to open the optical disk file C:\Users\Kenneth\Downloads\ubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso.

Could not get the storage format of the medium 'C:\Users\Kenneth\Downloads\ubuntu-14.10-desktop-amd64.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)
Component: Medium
Interface: IMedium {05f2bbb6-a3a6-4fb9-9b49-6d0dda7142ac}
Callee: IVirtualBox {fafa4e17-1ee2-4905-a10e-fe7c18bf5554}
Callee RC: VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)"

Can anyone be of any help?

Is your laptop 32-bit?...
Also, I would strictly NOT recoommend using intermediate versions, unless you know what you are doing.
Get a 14.04 LTS. Or, better yet, 12.04 LTS.

Hi there. I don't know what I'm doing actually. I'd just like to begin by playing with Ubuntu. So do recommend me finding 10.10 out there somewhere? I've heard thats a good place to strart.

I am running on a 64 bit.

Edit: just saw the bottom part of your comment. I'm going to get 12.04 LTS.

should that resolve my problem?

It would reduce the number of issues. But yet again, the beginning of my post was more important.
What kind of hardware your laptop is? Does it support hardware virtualization?
If not, then you may only install 32-bit guests.
