Guest OS - Windows 7 to be installed on External Hard disk

Hi All,
I'm using Macbook Pro with Retina Display July- 2014 Version with Mavericks installed.
It has 128GB SSD.
I want to use Windows 7 as guest OS using virtual box.
Now, I've an External Hard disk 1 TB with 400 GB free space.
Can I use some space from it without affecting the already present data on it.
Also, if the above is not possible. Then can I create partition on the external hard disk again without affecting the already present data on it.
Thanks for you help
