[Invalid] RHEL Missing Desktop

I set up VM as a RHEL desktop server, with a user cs-admin
After a while, when I login as user cs-admin, there are no desktop icons or top menu bar, only the VirtualBox menu which shows: Machine View Devices Help

I can log in as root and I see the following
VirtualBox menu showing: Machine View Devices Help
RHEL menu showing: Applications Places System plus Browser icon, mail reader icon, not taker icon
Desktop icons showing: Computer, root's Home, Trash

However, if logged in as root I let the inactivity timer time out so that the screen saver is invoked, then after selecting the VM again, the root login behaves exactly as the user login in that there is no RHEL menu bar or desktop icons, only the VirtualBox menu

Here are the guest and host details:
VirtualBox V 4.3.20 96997
Guest Additions VirtualBox-4.3.20-96997-Win.exe installed
Extension pack Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack installed
Host
Windows 7 Enterprise Service Pack 1, 32Gb memory, 64 bit
Guest
RHEL Linux, 64 bit, 6Gb memory, 3D acceleration NOT enabled

I have attached the Vbox.log.1 and Vbox.log files combined

I've googled extensively and searched the forum, but can't find any solution
Any help would be mus appreciated

Thanks
Geoff

It turns out that the problem has been seen by one of my colleagues - the cause and solution are as follows:

Cause:
One of the scripts that was run changes the entry in /etc/passwd for the the affected user

Solution:
Edit /etc/passwd as root and ensure the command prompt for the affect user is set to a shell, e.g. /bin/bash
