0x000000c4 during startup of Windows 2008 64 bit guest

Post by Kimpie »

Background: I'm trying to get the Visual Studio labs up & running to demo this to some teammates. I found some blog posts (can't link URLs since I'm to new) which described how this could be done with VirtualBox instead of Hyper-V.

Followed the instructions, then I encountered an 0xc0000225 error.I could resolve this by changing some VM settings (ICH9 chipset & enabled I/A APIC) and then I arrived at the 0x0000004 error when I try to start the machine. I have been searching for a solution, but I arrive at very conflicting advice (like the setextradata solution, which should be no longer needed due to patching), so I decided to check the community

Host:
  • OS: Windows 8.1 64 bit
  • RAM:8 GB
Guest:
  • OS: Windosw 2008 (64 bit)
  • Base Memory 1024 MB
If you need more information or I need to clarify something, feel free to say so.

Perhaps this previous thread will cast light :-

Otherwise, do I gather that this VM was originally installed under Hyper-v? You have not created a VirtualBox VM from scratch?

It was from scratch. The Host machine does not have Hyper V.

Edit: I checked the other post, no warning/error message of any kind are present in my attached logs.

Then why does the VM reference the hard disk file "C:\VStudio\VisualStudio2013.Update3.ALM\WMIv2\Virtual Hard Disks\2012R2Eval.vhd" ? That folder seems like an odd place for VirtualBox to have selected as a storage location if you created this VM from scratch. It seems to me that this is a downloaded VS2K3 evaluation VHD, not a copy of Win2K8 that you installed from a normal setup DVD.

Why yes. That's how the guides refer to it (Derek Hubbard & Olly).
