Help with failure to open a session on Windows 8.1 machine

Hi There,

A while back I tried to install a USB device onto my VirtualBox machine. While doing that, the VirtualBox crashed. Ever since, I haven't been able to open up a session. I just get an error message saying "Failed to open a session for the VirtualMachine SturmUbuntu2". I've included the log file for your review. Does anybody know what might be going on? Thanks so much in advance for your help in diagnosing this problem!!

Guest additions are installed

Virtualbox version: VirtualBox VM 4.2.6 r82870
Host computer: Windows 8.1 64-bit with 8Gig of Memory
Guest computer: Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit with 4Gig of Memory

You might want to try a version of VirtualBox that's less than 2 years old.

Thanks for the response loukingjr. I did try as you suggested and that fixed the problem with regard to opening the session, however, now I'm unable to connect to the internet. I can connect to my wireless network, but no internet. Do you know if this is a known issue with the newest version of Virtualbox (ver 4.3.20)?

Are you saying you can't connect to the internet with your host or guest?

There are no problems connecting with VirtualBox 4.3.20 I'm aware of.

I'm having problems connecting to the internet with both the host as well as the guest. I restored back to a restore point before I installed VirtualBox and the internet works fine. However, with the old version of VirtualBox I can't open up a session. Any ideas? Thanks again for your help!

Not sure if this is related to your problem but see this bugtracker ticket: #11948

As a side note, when you install VirtualBox you should use "Run As Administrator".

Hi again loukingjr. Thanks so much for your help! It appears that the thread you posted is very much related to my problem. Seems like this is a relatively common problem on Windows 8.1 hosts. Anyway, I haven't gone through the steps yet as outlined in the post, but will do so soon. Thanks again!
