n00b: How to setextradata?

Post by DevFingers »

Hi. Seriously raw and new on OSX - have experience with VirtualBox on Windows...

But I need some VERY basic help here..

Need to run Windows 8.1 in latest VirtualBox (as of this post) on OS X Yosemite.
I've downloaded my ISO from MSDN.
I've set up VirtualBox guest machine to host Win8
Attached the ISO
I get the same error that others had:

Code: Select all

  Error code: 0x000000C4
Parameters:
0x0000000000000091
0x000000000000000F
0xFFFFF801E5962A80
0x0000000000000000
And I think to solve it I need to run:

Code: Select all

VBoxManage.exe c [vmname] VBoxInternal/CPUM/CMPXCHG16B 1
But, as you can see, this is OSX, and there's no .exe anything here.

How do I do the same command in OSX? (Told you - I'm in n00b Town Here...)

with the guest shutdown, right click on the VM name in the VB GUI, show log, save the vbox.log then compress it and attach it to a message.

  1. You have selected "Windows 8 (64 bit)". You need to change it to "Windows 8.1 (64 bit)".
  2. You do not need to set the extra data. That was an old workaround.
  3. In order to execute a command-line executable in OSX, you open up Terminal (in Applications/Utilities) and type "VBoxManage ...". Try it with "VBoxManage list vms".

owe you guys a beer. I'd even give up one of my Guinness.

Also, thanks for the tip on terminal. I thought you had to add full path to the app to find it.

I used to work solely in KSH on AIX and Unix - back in IBM Raven Node days. Is there a good primer for OSX shell? It's BSD, no?

The underpinnings of OSX is indeed BSD. Default shell is 'bash', but you can change it. If you have experience with any terminal window, you'll feel right at home...
