VirtualBox USB driver installation stops all USB activity

Post by samtweet »

Setup is as follows:
VitualBox 4.3.20
Latest extension pack installed
Host Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
Guest Win 7 Ultimate 64 Bit
VirtualBox Manager USB = Device Filters: 1 (1 active)
Keyboard USB wireless
Mouse USB wireless
AVG AntiVirus disabled on host and Guest
Status: Guest system running
Flash Drive inserted = "VirtualBox USB driver successfully installed"

At this point I loose connection to the KB and Mouse both for the host and guest and have to switch off totally and reboot. I am obviously missing some setting or other that affects the USB system.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Make sure your USB filter cannot match the keyboard or mouse. I.e. do not use a blank filter.

Thank you mpack

I deleted the blank filter and this has stopped the KB and Mouse from being disconnected. One step forward.

However the guest system reports "No USB devices attached" as per the text file attachment, I am not sure what to do next.

You can use a USB filter, just make sure it isn't blank. I.e. fill in the vendor field, or whatever else is just enough to identify your device.

Thanks again mpack

I have added filters for a couple of devices. Still not able to access the flash drives, the attachment in my previous post lists the reason/s for access failure to these devices.
Obviously I am missing some important step, but which one eludes me.

Please post the output of the following commands:
VBoxManage list usbhost
VBoxManage showvminfo "<YourVM>"
You issue the commands in the 'Command Prompt' and you have to be in the VirtulBox directory, typically 'C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtuaBox\.

If your flash drives are USB 3.0 AND they are plugged into USB 3.0 ports, they will not work. VirtualBox does not support USB 3.0 yet. You can get around the USB 3.0 problem by plugging USB 3.0 devices into USB 2.0 ports or you can create shared folders that point to USB 3.0 drives or flash drives.

The other command was
VBoxManage showvminfo "<YourVM>"
. you left the "v" out in showvminfo hence the syntax error.

In the filter that you have created for the PNY Attaché Pro, delete the values for: 'Revision', 'Manufacturer', 'Product', 'Remote', 'Serial Number' and leave only the values for 'VendorId' (13fe) and 'ProductId' (1d00), similar to the picture below. See if that helps.

Thank you socratis

There is progress, I can open the flash drive in the Guest, at the moment I am trying to test the setup.

I will report back as soon as I have definite information.

Not as good as I thought.
Flash Drive mounted in Host
Boot Guest
As soon as the Guest starts to boot the Flash Drive is dismounted in the Host.
The Flash Drive is shown in the Guest Network but is not accessible due to Host dismount
Flash Drive will not mount in either the Host or Guest
Shutdown the Guest, Flash Drive will remount in Host.

OK, try to change the order of these steps. Unplug the USB. Boot the guest all the way, including logging in. Then plug the USB. See if that helps. And remember, no USB3 devices on USB3 ports.
