You need to plug in the USB stick after the guest is started.

Attaching stick after starting VB and waiting for about 1 -2 min did not help

I also selected a USB1 stick and a USB1 port, no success either.

First are you literally saying you started VirtualBox and waited or are you saying to started the guest? Is the filter still blank?

I seriously doubt you have USB 1.0 ports, or stick

please attach the vbox.log for the guest.

Sorry my wording was incorrect: When I said "started VB" i meant "starting guest"

I attached the log file

I do appreciate your help a lot.

It has nothing to do with your USB problem (I don't think) but you are using a fairly old version of VirtualBox 4.3.10. You might want to update to 4.3.20 along with the extension pack. You also have XP set to use 3GB RAM. It won't hurt anything I suppose but 1GB is sufficient and 2GB more than enough.

I didn't see anything obvious in the log but someone else might.

You didn't say whether the USB filter is still empty. If it isn't you may want to blank it out again.

I forgot something simple. Did you add your username to the vboxuser group in Kubuntu?
if not, run this in Konsole…

Code: Select all

sudo adduser username vboxuser
replace username with your login name, then reboot.

You not only are using an old version, you are using the Ubuntu fork. If you do not install the official version from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads , I'm afraid that the help in these forums will stop here. Remember to also install the matching Extension Pack.

Since I took some time to look at your logs, when you install the official version and ExtPack, here are a few things to change/modify in your VM:
  1. I didn't see any USB devices inserted. Did you insert the USB device after the guest started completely?
  2. Post the output of the following commands:
    VBoxManage list usbhost
    VBoxManage showvminfo "Your_Virtual_Machine_Name"
  3. Change your VM RAM, as loukingjr said.
  4. Change your virtual hard drive from VHD to VDI (ref.: Log@ 00:00:00.354916).
  5. Enable VT-x in your BIOS (ref.: Log@ 00:00:00.374835).

Code: Select all

Installed Extension Packs:
00:00:00.327261 Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack (Version: 4.3.10 r93012; VRDE Module: VBoxVRDP)
00:00:00.327267 VNC (Version: 4.3.10 r93012; VRDE Module: VBoxVNC)
Unless I missed my mark none of this will do you any good as long as you have not installed the official extension pack from VirtualBox.

Read the above closely. It is a fork ext pack that only has the VNC adaptation of vRDP so no USB.

Remove everything and install all official VBox files from https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

After that the only important thing is to have your user name in the vboxusers group. You don't need any filters, nor do you need to plug/unplug when you have a Linux host.

Thanks for all your replies. I will upgrade to the latest 4.3.20 and follow the other advices you kindly gave me.

Quick feedback to my testing conditions:
- Filter was kept always empty to enable any USB device (that is the way I understand the filter settings).
- After the first advice to attach the USB device only AFTER the guest is running I only did it AFTER the guest start up was completed.

It only takes a day or two because I first need to study how I have to make an installation from a the VritualBox site into Linux. So far I installed only SW through the SW Center of kubuntu. I am also a newbie in Linux not only in VirtualBox.

Should you know a helpful link, I appreciate a lot if you kindly let me know.

I decided to tackle this matter already tonight.

I would appreciate if you could have a look at my installation preparation and add information where needed. (I am a newbie to linux and VirtualBox)

I am using kubuntu 14.10 LTS 64bit; the system is updated.

Prerequists:
I want to use GUIs for working with the VirtualBox.

Verification of installation

1-Qt 4.6.2
I used the PackageManager and searched for "Qt" and "Qt 4.6."
I found: libqt4-webkit - transitional package for Qt 4 WebKit module - not installed
Is this the package which is needed?
If not how can I identify the packages or install the package?

2-SDL 1.2.7

I used the PackageManager and searched for "SDL 1.2"
I found:
- libsdl-image1.2 - image loading library for Simple DirectMedia Layer 1.2, libraries - not installed
- libsdl-ttf2.0.0 - TrueType Font library for Simple DirectMedia Layer 1.2. libraries - not installed

I used the PackageManager and searched for "libsdl 1.2"
I found:
- libsdl-image1.2 - image loading library for Simple DirectMedia Layer 1.2, libraries - not installed
- libsdl-mixer1.2 - mixer library for Simple DirectMedia Layer 1.2, libraries - not installed
- libsdl-net1.2 - network library for Simple DirectMedia Layer 1.2, libraries - not installed
- libsdl-ttf2.0.0 - TrueType Font library for Simple Direc3-DKMStMedia Layer 1.2. libraries - not installed

3-DKMS
I used the PackageManager and searched for "DKMS"
I found:
- open-vm-dkms-lts-trusty - OpenVMware Toosl for virtual machines hosted on VMware (transitional package) - not installed
- open-vm-tools-lts-trusty-dkms - OpenVMware Toosl for virtual machines hosted on VMware (transitional package) - not installed

Are these the packages which are needed?
If not, how can I identify the packages or install them?

Downloads
I downloaded:
- virtualbox-4.3_4.3.20-96996~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb
- Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack

Are these file the right one?
If not which are the files I need?

If these are the rigth ones, can I just install them by double clicking and click "Install Package" on the "Package Installer-virtualbox 4.3

I really appreciate your help a lot!!!

Use the terminal to install needed packages.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install dkms build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
Now to avoid issues with the ubuntu package manager you should install gdebi if you want to use graphical manager to install with.

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gdebi

Thanks for your help with the commands.

I ran the commands and a bunch of packages got installed.

It seems that I am ready to install the main SW and the extension pack.

Are my downloads correct?

- virtualbox-4.3_4.3.20-96996~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb
- Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack

If not which are the files I need?

If these are the rigth ones, can I just install them by double clicking and click "Install Package" on the "Package Installer-virtualbox 4.3

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

The packages are the correct ones. Right click on the installable and then select to install with gdebi. The extension pack is installed within the VirtualBox main manager under preferences.

Note: Be sure you remove the previous fork first or you will have issues.

To be on the save side:
Note: Be sure you remove the previous fork first or you will have issues.
I uninstalled VirtualBox already using the Software Center (Muoin Discover). Is this sufficient or do I need run command to see if something is left and another command to make sure all traced are deleted?

I will follow your advice
....select to install with gdebi.

Just to understand Linux installations better:

When I right clicked on the "virtualbox-4.3_4.3.20-96996~Ubuntu~raring_amd64.deb" and selected "Open with" the proposal "QApt-Package installer" came up.

What is the difference between "gdebi" and "QApt-Package installer"

Thanks in advance for your continuous help!
