Re: USB stick is not recognized
That should be enough but since I never use a package manager I can not promise that it is. Just watch closely when installing at all of the messages you receive and note what they say.
IIRC you should receive a message that the distro has another version and that they suggest you use theirs, but of course that would be counter productive since it will install the same fork of the distro.

Re: USB stick is not recognized
Thanks for all the help you provided.
I actually checked once more for remaining packages of the 4.3.10 version. I found 5 and not only removed then but purched them using the Package Manager.
Thereafter I installed the 4.3.20 version, added the matching Extension pack. Created a new XP VM and added the Guest Addition using the menu point under Devices. Extension Pack and Guest Addition are to be seen as installed.
When I tried to add my username to the vboxusers group I ran into problems:
Manual mentions
So I used the given terminal command:
with my username added in the form
However there was no message at all after I entered my root-password.
I also used a the slightly different command I received in the thread:
with my username added in the form
Here I received
message:
in English: adduser: group 'vboxuser' not saved.
I changed the command to
Received
message:
in English: adduser: user 'vboxuser! not saved.
In the VM settings USB 1 and 2 is enabled and an empty filter set.
As I still cannot see a USB stick in the XP VM (USB stick attached AFTER the machine was running), I wonder how I can check if my name is in the users group.
Also when I open Device the submenu of USB is grey nothing possible.
The little USB icon on the bottom of the VM window shows "No USB device attached"
As for log-files I found that there are 4. To be on the safe side I attached the ones I identified as the last three.
What can I do next?
I do appreiciate a lot your continuing support!!!

@ loukingjr - Thanks for your quick reply and don't worry about a mistake. We are only/fortunately humans.
Now I received the message that I am member of the "vboxusers". One step further!
However, the VM still does not see an USB stick.

Re: USB stick is not recognized
you have to reboot your computer after adding yourself to the vboxusers group.

Re: USB stick is not recognized
How could I forget to reboot!!! ??? Not to do a reboot of the host was a BIG mistake. I am sorry!
In Devices > USB I can see several devices .
Under MyComputer in the XP guest I don't see anything yet.
Should you still have a hint for me, I appreciate it a lot.

Re: USB stick is not recognized
One more hint. As Perryg mentioned since you are using a Linux host, you don't need to add USB Filters(I always forget that), and since you already created one, you should probably remove it. All you should have to do is select one of the USB devices from the Devices menu with one caveat, VirtualBox does not support USB 3.0.

Re: USB stick is not recognized
Also thanks a lot for the last information!
Now the VM is running fine including my most important XP only based SW which requires an USB license dongle.
I removed the USB filter and the machine runs.
The only problem I still encounter is that I have to always check after each guest start the license dongle (USB) under Devices > USB Devises.
Should there be a countermeasure it would just be beautiful.
Offer:
As I kept notes on what I did from the start of the uninstallation of the VB v4.3. 10 , the installation of 4.3.20 and the set-up of an XP machine which sees the USB devices, I am willing to brush my notes up for a publication in the forum.
Questions:
1 - Is there interest for such a document?
2 - What is the best way to publish it? (eg. Creation of new post including the SOLVED flag?)

Re: USB stick is not recognized
Actually marking this thread as solved would be a good thing.
Just go to the first post>edit>type [Solved] in front of the title>submit.

Re: [SOLVED] USB stick is not recognized
It's never too late to get help from an old thread! Of course there's the User Manual too...
BTW, moving to "Linux Hosts" from "Windows Guests", since the thread is clearly dealing with the Linux host problems.
