Virtual Box won't start

I've built a new system running Windows 10 Technical Preview and installed VirtualBox and found it won't start. When i've looked deeper into this, I found that my motherboard doesn't support hardware virtualization. Is this required for VirtualBox? I've tried enabling Hyper-V in windows and I get an error message saying "Hyper-V cannot be installed. Virtualization support is disabled in the firmware". Does this mean I cannot run any virtualization software unless I change the mobo? Or maybe there is a work-around which will allow me to get up and running?

When I looked in the bios, there was an option there for vt-d. I upgraded the bios and found they removed it. I found other forums saying that Asus never got it working.

Full System: Core I7-4790, ASUS Z97-A mobo, 16G Ram, Samsung 540 EVO ssd

Well a few things. First of all Windows 10 is pre-release so there are a number of things that may not work or aren't included. Hyper-V may be one of them. As far as VT-d you don't need that but you do need to have VT-x to run 64bit guests or even Windows 8.1 32bit in VirtualBox. You might want to try rolling back to VirtualBox 4.3.12.

btw, I don't think your board has anything to do with anything. Your CPU supports VT-x.

Right, except that means rolling back the:
  1. Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack
  2. and/or VBoxGuestAdditions_4.3.20.iso
A pain, in the neck, shut the front door (not you!..:)); logs are full of happy, happy things && god-only-knows dafuq is going on:

Code: Select all

53c.100c: '\Device\HarddiskVolume1\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe' has no imports
(and/or similar; NOTHING @ all to do w/anything, grr)

P.S. Just to spite me, this - of all things - works flawlessly, hah! @

Yes, by definition rolling back means to roll back all the components.
Normally you don't have to download the guest additions .iso separately since it's included in the VirtualBox package.

We have a different idea of what constitutes "a pain in the neck". :D
