Can someone tell me how to update the Mac OS?? please

Here's the story,
I am new to this virtual box thing, I downloaded Mac OS X 10.9 onto virtual box through a YouTube video, and I successfully did it. However I want to update my OS that is on Virtual Box so I went to the app store within the Mac (on Virtual Box) and updated all the apps now i want to update the OS from OS X 10.9 to OS X 10.10 so in the app store I click to upgrade the software and the package successfully installed onto my Mac (on Virtual Box) and then I click to continue and the the 10.10 package runs and it needs to restart so it automatically restarts and then after a while it just freezes the mouse doesn't move and so I press 'HOST' + R to restart and when it has all loaded up it hasn't been upgraded to OS X 10.10 and I've tried it like 3 times and it is making me sad because its not working

Can someone tell me how to upgrade my OS X 10.9 to OS X 10.10 please? Because I'm thick and I don't know how to do it. I have searched on this Forum and Unfortunately I haven found what I was looking for because I'm thick, if there is tho please don't bother with the question and send me a link to it because I don't wanna break the rules and regulations thingy of the Virtual Box Forum.
