USB to Serial adapter/Win XP pro

Post by sparky741 »

Hello all! Looking for some help getting my USB to Serial adapter working on OS X 10.10 Yosimite host running Win XP pro guest. I installed the Prolific(2303) driver in OS X without any issues. When I attach the adapter in my XP guest, it recognizes it and installs the driver(which I also downloaded from Prolific). The problem is that as it finishes up, it says it had a problem with the installation, and when I look at it in Device Manager, it has the yellow triangle on the Prolific USB-to_Serial adapter(COM 3). Opening the Properties window shows that it says the device could not start(Code 10). I searched through this forum and did not find a suitable answer. I also have installed the Extension pack on my host and the guest additions in XP. I did not create any USB filters either. Anyone have any ideas on what I could try next? Any help id greatly appreciated.

Kind of found a solution to this problem. Found another website that says to use an older driver. Apparently, because of fake Prolific chips coming out of China, the newer drivers will not work with the older chips even if it is legitimate, pretty much forcing the user to get new hardware. Installed a driver from 2005 and now Windows does not produce the Code 10 error I was getting with the new driver. Also did a loopback test and all looks good.

Apparently not a VirtualBox problem as it seems, but thank you for sharing the knowledge. It might help some other people with similar problems.
