Vb keeps harddisk busy, crashes

Hi there,

Almost always whenever i use/start VB my puter keeps reading on the harddisk so busy that a hardware reset is the only solution (mouse/keyboard are stuck). Sometimes it resumes again after a couple minutes but often it seems to keep loading forever and sometimes vb quits the virtual machine.. Originally, this problem occured just every know and then but currently it seems to come up all the time.

I use vb 1.5 on Ubuntu Gutsy with W2k as the host.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I had a problem with similar symptoms in Hardy having upgraded from Dapper running KDE. After booting but before running VB I ran a terminal session and ran top within that. On Dapper 300+Mb of memory was used. In Hardy it was 800+Mb. This was on a 1G laptop. The free memory was inadequate to run VB without excessive swapping. I restored my Dapper backup and am continuing to use that. Because I'd come straight from Dapper to Hardy I'd no info as to whether this bloat was limited to Hardy. Maybe Gutsy is also bloated and that's the source of your problem.

Take a look at memory use before running VB. If there isn't enough for your VM then you either need to add more memory or try a slimmer distro. If there is enough memory then you've some other problem. But it sounds like swapping due to insufficient free memory.
