Windows 8.1 guest in Mac OS display size restricted
Windows 8.1 guest in Mac OS display size restricted
I'm running Windows 8.1 32bit in vbox installation v4.3.20 r 96996 the guest additions are installed, the host OS is Mac OS 10.9.5
The issue is that I can not change the resolution of the Windows guest to something else then 1024x768, the graphic adapter in Windows is "VirtualBox Graphics Adapter for Windows 8".
In the VBox Manager I can give 128MB of Video Memory not more, Monitor Count is 1. 3D and 2D Video Acceleration are disabled.

btw, make sure to choose the Windows 8.1 template in the VB settings. You should probably enable 2D and 3D if you want any kind of performance.

yes I picked the Win 8.1 32 bit template and when I enable the 2D and 3D acceleration the guest OS does not boot anymore.loukingjr wrote:btw, make sure to choose the Windows 8.1 template in the VB settings. You should probably enable 2D and 3D if you want any kind of performance.

Re: Windows 8.1 guest in Mac OS display size restricted
I don't see anything obvious in the log other than you have 5GBs of RAM assigned to a 32bit guest. I don't think that has anything to do with your resolution problem but 2GBs of RAM would be sufficient. What happens when you hit 'Host'+F to switch to full screen?
vbox.log is always the latest.

this shouldn't happen btw. even without the guest additions installed.…when I enable the 2D and 3D acceleration the guest OS does not boot anymore.

The OP's MacBook Pro resolution is 1440x900 1920x1200 and has dual graphics processors -- a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT with 512 MB of dedicated GDDR3 SDRAM and a NVIDIA GeForce 9400M with 256 MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory.

Re: Windows 8.1 guest in Mac OS display size restricted
One thing you could try although I can't say it will fix your issue is to reinstall VirtualBox. Be sure to use the VirtualBox_Uninstall.tool to uninstall first.
Did you reduce the RAM allocated to your guest?

I imported an old virtual image with Win XP installed on it, and it has no issues at all. The display resolution of the XP guest is 1920x1047.
