W7 host, XP guest won't network, but 2000 does

I'm running a Win7 SP1 host and VB 4.3.20. A Win 2000 guest "sees" the host, but an XP host doesn't. I think I've gone through the same install process with both.

I'd appreciate some clues on how to proceed. On the XP guest ipconfig outputs nothing. Device manager shows an AMD PCNet family adapter working correctly on 2000; on XP it shows an unknown device in the PCI slot. Of course, I can't get online for it to search for a driver when I'm running XP!

Check your Network settings for the XP guest, under the Advanced dropdown. Likely the "Adapter type" is not one of the kinds that XP has built-in drivers for. Of the "cards" listed, I have used the "PCnet-Fast III" and the "Intel Pro/1000 T server" cards without having to install drivers in XP.

Thanks for a prompt response.

The only adapter on offer for XP is Intel Pro/1000 MT Desktop (8254OEM). For 2000 there is a wide choice, including the ones you mention.

Just downloaded drivers for this adapter, and ipconfig is showing a connection.

Many thanks

I have gotten drivers for the MT Desktop adapter for XP guests, too, and they have worked solidly (before I found that the T adapter worked without downloading drivers). Glad you're up and running!

But it's odd that your XP template only showed that one card, not the six that I have to choose from. I haven't updated to 4.3.20 yet, though, still on 4.2.16 (if it ain't broke don't fix it, I say :) ) I wonder if someone else can weigh in on what his or her 4.3.20 XP template shows for the available NICs.
