4.3.20 USB issues

I run 4.3.20 on a Windows 8.1 x64 Host. I run several different guest OSes, but the two most important are a Debian based Linux and a Windows 7 system.
On both VMs I run into the problem that I cannot connect any USB devices. They do appear under the device list (Menu - Device - USB) , I can select them, but nothing seems to happen. Selecting them a second time results in a device busy error. I am used to seeing a Virtual USB Device being installed (espc. on W7 host) but not such thing happens in this case. What might I be overlooking here? I did disable the strict driver signing policy of W8.1.
Any suggestions on this issue?

I have the same problem with Linux host and WinXP 32bit guest. My list of attached USB devices is empty.

@snev,

Your issue is different because you have a Linux host. Please post in the Linux as host section and I will tell you what you need to do.

Reinstall Virtualbox as an Administer. Right click on the file under downloads and click run as administrater and re-install and the program will recognize the usb drives. Just make sure you install this driver package http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualb ... ox-extpack after the installation. and every thing but file sharing should work, I haven't figured out that one yet.

In my case I am offered a list with 'all' USB devices under menu 'Devices - USB devices', but selecting them just doen not work. Nothing seems to happen. Seems being the correct word as the state of the device does change to Captured, but does not show up in the guest. This now seems to be an issue with a W81x64 Host only as my W7x64 seems to be working fine.
