Can't copy/paste between Windows host and Linux VM

I have a Windows 7 host with virtualbox 4.3.20 and a Lubuntu 14.10 guest. I installed virtualbox guest additions as described on the website and while my screen can resize now, I cannot drag/drop files to or from the guest. (and yes, I did enable 'bidirectional' in the 'Devices' menu for drag'n'drop).
What do I try next?

Drag n Drop only works from host to guest at the moment. It's mentioned in the users manual. You can't copy and paste files, only text and image clippings.

for what ever reason it seems it only doesn't work with LXDE. It even works with LXQt.
it works with Mate, Unity, Gnome3, XFCE, Cinnamon, LXQt, Plasma 5, KDE

Just to check I installed Sparky Linux 3.6 LXDE. Can't drag n drop from host to guest so it definitely seems to be an LXDE issue rather than a Lubuntu issue.
