[Solved]Extremely slow Win7 SP1 boot, Fedora 21 (linux) host

Post by mapmatter »

Running Fedora 21 on a Macbook Pro i7 (16GB RAM), and installed the latest Virtualbox. However, it takes about 10 minutes for Windows 7 SP1 to boot. I/O performance is fairly bad, but the system is usable once it boots. Installing the guest additions makes no difference. I tried installing Windows 8 as a test, but had the same issue.

I'm dedicating 2 cores, 3GB RAM to the system; 50GB dynamic disk.

Any suggestions?

I can't even imagine how many hardware/firmware issues there could be running Fedora 21 on a MacBook. I can tell you it takes less than 30 seconds to boot W7 on my iMac.

No firmware or hardware issues to speak of. Fedora 21 runs perfectly on this system, with the exception of VirtualBox. This post is a request for input on the problem of slow VM boot and performance under VirtualBox, not sure how your post is relevant.

How it is relevant is how many people do you think frequent this forum running Fedora 21 on a MacBook Pro to be able to answer your question?

I'm sure you will get more replies.

Very slow Windows boots IME often indicate some kind of network problem.

It looks like an issue with the virtualbox, org package. Installed the rpmfusion package and things are running as expected.

There is something odd about this. My understanding was Fedora doesn't have their own builds of VirtualBox or the guest additions and they just link to the VirtualBox repos.

After checking my F20 and F21 guests that's obviously not true. I guess I have to be more careful who I listen to.
