VBox 4.3.18 and 4.3.20 -- VMs will not start

Post by Ripsnark »

Hello,

Our IT department pushed out an unknown patch last night that has disabled VBox from starting any VMs (multiple users at my work location are having this issue). Whatever was patched does not appear in the Windows Update list, but could be related to Symantec Endpoint Protection (the only other thing that was changed recently on my machine).

Please note that I did have KB3003493 installed and all was working OK with it (other users had to remove it as described on this forum). I uninstalled it also, but it made no difference.

In the startup log, the failure happens AFTER the line:
supR3HardenedScreenImage/NtCreateSection: cache hit (Unknown Status 22900 (0x5974)) on \Device\HarddiskVolume2\Windows\System32\kernel32.dll [lacks WinVerifyTrust]
Error (rc=258):

On my formerly working machine, the next line in the log should be:
supR3HardenedDllNotificationCallback: load 000007fefd7a0000 LB 0x0006c000 C:\windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll [fFlags=0x0]

Another symptom of this error is that whenever I run VirtualBox.exe to try anything, my host machine machine will no longer shutdown (it hangs on the "Shutting Down..." screen), and must be forced off. The machine will shutdown normally if I don't run the app. I am running 4.3.18, but other users with 4.3.20 are having this problem as well.

Any advice is appreciated.

I'm getting the same as the OP. I have version 4.3.18 r96516. I have several VMs I have been running for a couple of months now. Then, two days ago my desktop performed a Windows Update and it will no longer start any VMs with a similar error as the OP. Zipped log file is attached.

Here is a list of the Windows Updates that my machine performed that night, with the most likely candidates first:

Windows 7 Updates
KB2952664
KB3004394
KB3013126
KB3014406
KB3008923
KB3009736
KB3006121
KB3006625
KB3013410

MS Office or Definition Updates (I don't think it would be one of these, as they are application specific)
KB890830
KB2597088
KB2553140
KB2910899
KB2883019
KB2910896
KB2553154
KB2899519
KB2889818
KB2910902
KB2589348
KB2880517

Uninstalled and installed 4.3.16.

It gives me a dialog saying NtCreateFile(\Device\VBoxDrvStub) failed: 0xc0000034 STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND (0 retries) (rc=-101)
"Make sure the kernel module has been loaded successfully."

The dialog has an "Abort" button, which when pressed gives me another Error dialog indicating an exit code of 1.

Log attached.

I seriously doubt that we need yet another thread to discuss the KB3004394 issue. Please review some of the postings in "Windows Hosts" from recent days.
