Unable to ping host only network adapter "General Failure"

Post by inkit »

Hello
I am unable to ping my windows host machine ip configured for the host only adapter.

I am using the following settings on windows host:

IP address for windows host is: 192.168.56.1
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: nothing
Virtual Box version: 4.3.20.r96997

When i do a ping to the host windows machine itself, it fails with
Pinging 192.168.56.1 with 32 bytes of data:
General failure.
General failure.
General failure.
General failure.

I have check my firewall in off.

I have a Linux 32 bit machine on this VM as guest and IP for that is 192.168.56.121, needless to say even that is not pingable.

Now, as soon as i remove my laptop from external network (wifi internet). The ping starts working.

Please advice.

Windows 7 by default ignores incoming pings (ICMP disabled). Check Google for how to enable it if you really need ping to work, but be aware that it's disabled for a reason (Google that too).

I have already disabled my firewall. Does that count?

I have tried enabling ICMP echo requests

Doesn't work

Moreover, when i remove my laptop from internet then it starts working.

I'm quite confident that the feature works - lots of people use it - so your problem must come down to a network configuration error in guest or host.

I'm reluctant to get into Win7 support, as Microsoft surely have enough support techs of their own, but I suppose it could also be the old "unidentified network" problem previously discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=27924.

Did the exact thing. Added *NdisDeviceType DWORD key = 1.

Disabled / enabled the virtual host only adapter.

din't helped!!

Issue still remains. "General Failure" still coming.

In that case I'm out of ideas, and I leave to you the aforementioned Microsoft support staff.
