is it possible I copy the vdi to my new hardy installation and start it with virtualbox?
or do I have to install everything new?

All vdi files created with VirtualBox are interexchangeable, meaning if you create a VM on Windows, you can use that vdi on Linux. That is because VB emulates the same hardware on every platform. You just need to make sure that the settings are the same, or roughly the same (most important is the Guest OS setting ;). And don't forget any IOAPIC settings or the like that has a warning about possible problems if disabled after the Guest is installed with the option enabled.

That is described in the tooltip and the user manual. I think it's something like advanced ACPI options or something.
