Linux Mint 17 XFCE slow on Windows 7 host

Post by TiAm »

I am a complete newcomer to virtual machines, so bear that in mind.

I am trying to get a Linux Mint 17 xfce 64bit guest going. My host is a Win7 Ultimate x64 machine w/ 3570k processor, 16gb ram, 256gb ssd, hd4000 graphics. I am running Virtualbox 4.3.20.

I managed to create the guest system and install lm17. For the most part it seems to be running fine, except for the display quality.

Moving the mouse rapidly, dragging windows around, or viewing animation/videos takes on a herky-jerky quality that reminds me of a bad vsync failure. Shrinking the display window doesn't make a difference. Going fullscreen doesn't make a difference. Moving to another monitor doesn't make a difference.

In an attempt to correct this I increased the number of available cores from 1 to 2, then all 4. No change.

I tried with and without 3D acceleration; substantially more cpu usage when 3D acceleration is off, but the same display quality, neither better nor worse.

I uninstalled the Vbox guest additions that came with LM17 and reinstalled the GA's provided with VB 4.3.20. No difference.

In every other way the system seems very fast. I installed it on my SSD drive, so programs start quickly. Heavy operations in GIMP go pretty fast; a Gaussian blur on a large canvas seemed nearly as fast as on my Win7 host.

At this point I am stumped; it seems that nothing I try makes any difference. I have included the Vbox.log for the virtual machine in question. I have also included a log of the 'showvminfo' command.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Tim

Intel graphics has been known to have issues. Make sure that you have the latest version of the drivers installed on the host.

Thanks for the reply. My drivers are pretty current, but I'll update them and try again. Maybe it's time to pick up a real gpu...
