can't run Ubuntu 14 on Windows 8 4K laptop

I just bought a Toshiba P55T laptop with a 4k display. I installed virtualbox and tried to install Ubuntu 14.10.

It displayed the Ubuntu 4 progressing dots for a few seconds, then added [ 14.793316] intel_rapi: no valid rapl domains found in package 0allized - upgrade BIOS or use force_addr=0xaddr

then displayed virtual color bars within the guest window like the video card was not initialized correctly.
Were do I find more about the force_addr_=0xaddr?

Is there a way to get it to work? or do I need to return the laptop?

The messages you see are because Ubuntu is running virtual and not on metal and can be ignored. The issue you have can be over come by using the host+f1 followed by a host+f7. You should then be able to install the guest.

Not: the host key by default is the rt. ctrl key

I think it's Host+F1 then Host+F7. :)

Yup dyslexic this evening. It is host+f1 then host+f7 but then again one never knows it could be different in my alternate universe.
