VirtualBox is disabling External Drive on bootup

Post by Shashidhar »

Hello,

I have Installed Virtualbox 4.3.20, and installed ubuntu 14.04 on a external dirve VM instance. After a successful setup I switched off the instance and now when I want to launch it again Virtualbox throws a error 'The memory could not be read'.

After a few trials I noticed that before the VM starts to boot up, the external drive gets detected. So I reattached the drive and make sure it is available, I am able to write and delete files on it, but when I start ubuntu instance just before it boots up the drive disappears!!!! and VM throws 'The memeory could not be read'.

Some times at the error box after I click 'OK' the external drive appears back. I am not sure where and how to debug this. Any pointers on this will be helpful.

From this:
" when I start ubuntu instance just before it boots up the [external] drive disappears!!!! and VM throws 'The memeory could not be read'."
I wonder if you have set an unedited USB filter on your guest which is attempting to pull every USB device from your host into your guest, including the drive the guest is on. Check to see if you have any USB filters established and delete them for now.

If that isn't it, as a test, uninstall 4.3.20 and install 4.3.12, including the extension pack. If the guest works, you've run afoul of the hardening issue the developers are working on.
